Update Jan. 3, 2008

Happy New Year 2008!

I hope that you all had a wonderful holiday! We are back to work in 2nd grade! This week we are finishing a few incomplete projects from December - look for a cute Winter decoration and a super 2008 calendar created by your child! We have started our new story "Johnny Appleseed" and are looking at the /ir/ sound spelled -eer, and -ear. In Grammar we are looking at capitalizing the days of the week. The students will also be writing an informative paragraph using good topic sentences followed by detail sentences. Tests in Language Arts will be NEXT Friday, Jan. 11.

In Math we have been practicing 2 digit addition with renaming the ones to tens and ones. We have used sticks - wrapping up 10 individual sticks to represent one ten. This addition is familiar to you because it is the algorithm that you and I learned in school. We are also looking at and practicing the Everyday Math algorithm of partial products. The students need to learn as many algorithms as possible and then use the one that works best for the situation and for THEM! It seems that many of the students have already found the one that works for them....this is GREAT! Thank you for encouraging them to keep on practicing!! Next week we will be starting Unit 5 in the Everyday Math series looking briefly at geometry and continuing addition and subtraction problems.

Stay warm!!
